Vandals prevail

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Idaho women's basketball team overcame a sluggish start and a large rebounding discrepancy to prevail with a 64-63 double-overtime win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon.

The win lifts Idaho to 3-0 on the season, the team's first 3-0 start since the 2003-04 season. UCSB drops to 0-4 on the season.

The Gauchos started the game hot, pulling ahead to an 11-0 lead before Idaho got on the board. UCSB led 17-6 when Idaho went on a 10-0 run, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers by Yinka Olorunnife and Rachele Kloke to close the gap to 17-16. UCSB put together a 6-0 mini-run to lead 23-16 before Idaho pulled within 24-20 to close the first half.

The Vandals took their first lead when Bianca Cheever hit a 3-pointer with 15:55 to play in the second half that put Idaho on top 29-28. The teams traded the lead for much of the second half until Idaho found itself trailing 50-48 with 14 seconds. Olorunnife then drew a foul and hit both ends of her 1-and-1 free throws to tie the game. In all, there were four ties and eight lead changes in the second half, but the first 40 minutes were not enough, as the teams found themselves in a 50-50 tie at the end of regulation.

Idaho trailed by as many as four points in the first overtime stanza, but kept battling. UCSB appeared to have control of the game with a 57-55 lead and the ball with under 20 seconds to play in the game and the shot clock turned off. But with intense pressure from Idaho's defense, Melissa Zornig turned the ball over on an inbounds play, giving the Vandals another opportunity. The Vandals capitalized on the mistake as Shaena Kuehu drew a foul and hit both free throws to tie the game at 57 with 17 seconds left and force a second overtime.

The Vandals never trailed in the second overtime, jumping ahead to a 63-58 lead with less than two minutes to play. The Gauchos cut that lead to just one point after Zornig hit a 3-pointer to make the score 64-63 with 44 seconds to play, but after Kuehu missed a jumper, Emilie Johnson's buzzer-beating 3-point attempt was off target, and Idaho escaped with the win.

Olorunnife tallied her third double-double in three games as she led all scorers with 17 points and added 12 rebounds. Kloke finished with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting, and added six rebounds for Idaho. Derisa Taleni had 12 points and three rebounds, Cheever hit 4-of-8 shots to finish with 10 points, and Kuehu had 11 rebounds and four points in the game.

Idaho shot just 30.0 percent (21-of-70) for the game, and hit only 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) of its 3-point attempts. UCSB owned a 59-49 advantage in rebounding, including an 18-11 edge in offensive rebounds which led to a 13-10 lead in second-chance points. UCSB shot 32.9 percent (24-of-73) from the field.

The Vandals will travel to Eugene, Ore., for the Oregon Tournament Nov. 26-28, where they will take on Oregon (Nov. 26), Sacramento State (Nov. 27) and Cal. State Bakersfield (Nov. 28).
