Vandals roll to victory

EUGENE, Ore. - It was all Vandals in Saturday's women's basketball game between Idaho and Sacramento State, as Idaho jumped out to an early 5-0 lead that it would never give up. After going ahead 24-14 with under eight minutes left in the first half, the Vandals would lead by double-digits for the remainder of the game, on their way to an 86-66 victory over the Hornets.

"I thought we got off to a really good start," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "We broke their pressure, we shot the ball well in the first half and we were getting to the rim. We got up to a 20-point lead and maintained it."

The Vandals improve to 4-1 on the season, while Sacramento State falls to 1-5. Idaho got 41 of its 86 points off the bench, led by a team-high 18 from junior Keri Arendse on a 6-of-12 shooting performance. Arendse also added seven rebounds, four assists and a steal in 30 minutes of action in the game.

"Keri was fantastic today," Newlee said. "She hit her shots, she rebounded, she did all the things we wanted her to do."

Senior Yinka Olorunnife had her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Alyssa Charlston nearly tallied her first career double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds, while adding two assists and three blocks for the Vandals. Senior Derisa Taleni had seven points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals, and freshman Ashley Walters finished with eight points, four rebounds, four blocks and two assists. Junior Ganeaya Rogers made her second consecutive start for Idaho, and finished with nine points, while senior Rachele Kloke added eight for Idaho.

"I think teams have to know that we are deeper than we've ever been, that adds to their prep time," Newlee said. "Today is a great example, with Shaena (Kuehu), Rachele and Yinka sitting much of the first half with two fouls, Ashley (Walters) and Alyssa (Charlston) were playing extended minutes and contributing. That Depth is nice to have."

The Vandals shot 42.5 percent from the field in the game, hitting 34-of-80 shots, but Idaho hit only 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) attempts from long range. Idaho had 21 assists on its 34 made field goals. The Vandals connected on 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) free throws.

The Idaho defense held Sacramento State to just 28.9 percent shooting (26-for-90) for the game, and just 15.6 (5-of-32) percent from 3-point distance.

The Vandals owned a 60-50 rebounding advantage, but gave the Hornets a 19-14 edge in turnovers. Sacramento State used a 24-22 advantage on the offensive glass to lead 20-14 in second chance points.

The Hornets were led by 18 points from Jasmine Cannady and 11 from Shanti Smith. Kylie Kuhns finished with eight points and 14 rebounds for Sacramento State.

Olorunnife's 17 points in the game give her over 1,000 for her career as she entered the game with 987, and now has 1,004 as a Vandal.

The win puts Idaho at 1-1 in the Oregon Tournament, after falling to the host Ducks on Friday. The Vandals wrap up the event against Cal. State Bakersfield on Sunday at noon. Fans can follow the live stats of that game at www.GoDucks.com.

"It's going to be tough, the third game in three days," Newlee said. "Bakersfield is extremely athletic, they're going to bring full court pressure and an up-tempo style. They're very talented and they've very good on the glass. We're going to have to defend well and take care of the basketball."
