MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho women's basketball team took advantage of its first opportunity to step on the court against an opponent this season, as it topped LCSC 73-58 in its only exhibition game before the 2010-11 season opener.
Alyssa Charlston had team-highs with 15 points and six rebounds in her Vandal debut. The 6-foot-1 freshman hit 4-of-9 shots including 3-of-5 3-point attempts. Senior Yinka Olorunnife finished with 11 points and six boards, and junior transfer Ganeaya Rogers had 12 points and five rebounds, hitting 5-of-6 shots for the Vandals.
Senior Rachele Kloke finished with nine points and four rebounds, and senior Bianca Cheever hit 2-of-3 3-pointers to finish with six points.
"It felt good to finally be back on the Mem floor and show everybody what we've been practicing," Kloke said. "This team is very aggressive, we put a lot of effort in."
The Vandals shot .418 for the game, connecting on 23-of-55 shots. Idaho held a slim 36-34 edge on the glass, and had three fewer turnovers, finishing with 15 while LCSC had 18.
But there were some things Idaho coach Jon Newlee didn't like. One of those was Idaho's 15 total fouls, sending the Warriors to the free throw line 16 times.
"I'm not happy about putting them at the line as many times as we did. I think a lot of times we need to be smarter when we're trying to be aggressive," Newlee said. "I think rebounding needs to get better. I was not happy with our rebounding tonight. Out turnovers, some of that was just passing and catching, and it's the first-game jitters, and that is what the exhibition game is for, to get those out."
The Warriors kept the game close throughout the first half, going into the break trailing just 33-29. That had a lot to do with the fact that they were able to get offensive rebounds and second chances all night, as they owned a 13-6 advantage in second-chance points in the game.
In all, six players saw action for the first time as a Vandal. In addition to Charlston and Rogers, junior transfer Keri Arendse got the start at point guard for the Vandals and finished with four points and one assist. Adrie Shiels, another junior transfer, had two points, three rebounds, one assist and a steal. Ashley Walters, a 6-foot-4 freshman, finished with four points and four rebounds, and sophomore Ana Overgaard had one rebound in two minutes of action.
"I think they (the newcomers) did a good job," Newlee said. "They didn't play scared. I thought they were trying to do what we've been doing in practice. I liked their aggressiveness. The main thing is you want to make sure that they're not playing back on their heels, and they didn't. I thought they came in and looked pretty comfortable out there."
The Vandals will open the regular season on Nov. 13 at home against Eastern Oregon. Tipoff of that game will be at 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Gym, and will be the first half of a men's-women's doubleheader. The men will face Eastern Oregon following the women's game.
