Vandal women stop Aggies

MOSCOW - Three Vandal women scored in double figures, including freshman Alyssa Charlston's career-high 15 points off the bench, and Idaho defeated New Mexico State at the Cowan Spectrum by a 64-51 margin on Saturday.

With the win, the Vandals improve to 11-8 on the season, and 4-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. New Mexico State falls to 10-11 on the year and 4-3 in the WAC.

Idaho senior Rachele Kloke joined the 1,000-point club in the game, as she scored a game-high 17 to bring her career total to 1,002. Fellow senior Yinka Olorunnife tallied the 27th double-double of her career and 10th of the season with 16 points and a season-high-tying 18 rebounds. Olorunnife moved into a tie for fourth place in WAC history with 936 career rebounds.

"In my eyes, I just really want that ball," Olorunnife said. "When I see that shot go off, miss or make, my eyes are just on the ball, and regardless of where it goes I just get after it. If I get it or don't get it, I'm always down there trying to get a rebound."

The Vandals also tied the WAC's all-time record for fewest fouls in a game, committing only five.

But things didn't look bright for Idaho at the get-go. The Vandals missed their first seven shots, and didn't get on the scoreboard until the 15:09 mark in the first half. Idaho stayed cold, going 1-for-12 through the first eight minutes of the game. But despite the cold shooting, Idaho never trailed by more than seven points, and the Vandals connected on 10 of their final 19 shots in the first half to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room at the break.

"I thought we were taking good shots, but what I was worried about is that we let (Thursday's loss) carry over, because it was so in our head how we played offensively," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said."But Alyssa came in and lit a spark under us and kind of got us going. All of the sudden you look up, and there we were, right in the game.

New Mexico State cut the lead to just two, at 40-38 with 13:26 left to play, and kept the score close throughout a majority of the second half. But an 11-0 Idaho run that took nearly the final four minutes of the game sealed the Vandal victory.

The Vandals converted all 10 of their free throw attempts in the first half, and hit 17-of-21 for the game. Meanwhile, NMSU went just 2-of-5 from the free throw line.

The Vandals shot 34.5 percent from the field for the game, hitting 20-of-58 shots including 7-of-20 3-pointers. New Mexico State hit 36.7 percent of its field goals, connecting on 22-of-60 and 5-of-15 3-pointers.

"It's nice to be able to win when you're not just hot, and really filling it up," Newlee said. "To be able to kind of work for it. I thought that's what we did tonight, we just stuck with it. We did a great job of attacking the rim and getting to the free throw line, and converting at the free throw line."

Idaho also dominated the glass, owning a 46-33 advantage in rebounding and a 12-2 edge in second chance points.

Charlston's 15 points topped her previous career-high of 13. She hit 4-of-10 shots in the game, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

"It was a lot of fun, and it was finally starting to click in the system, and it's something I've been working on for a long time," Charlston said. "To incorporate the wing position and the post position, I switched mid-way through the season, so I'm starting to really work my way into the system, and it's a great system, so it's a lot of fun."

"It was really good to see her come out, she was relaxed, she took good shots," Newlee said. "She just came out strong. I think we all caught a glimpse of what she is capable of doing and why I'm so excited for her future as a Vandal. I just think the sky is the limit for Alyssa."

The Vandals finished with 14 turnovers in the game, while NMSU committed just nine. The Aggies were led by Madison Spence, who scored 13 points, and was the only NMSU player to score in double-figures.

The Vandals wrap up their four-game home stand on Feb. 2 against San Jose State. That game tips off at 6 p.m. in the Cowan Spectrum, and is University of Idaho Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. All U of I faculty and Staff will receive free admission to the game.
