MOSCOW, Idaho - Just three days after its worst shooting performance of the season, the Idaho women's basketball team came through with its best shooting display, knocking down 48.1 percent of its shots in a 65-59 home win over Wyoming Sunday afternoon.
"We kind of went back to the basics at practice the last couple of days with layups, layups and more layups," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "We got away from the 3-ball a little and concentrated on finishing at the rim and it looks like it really paid off for us tonight."
The Vandals improve to 4-7 with the win, Newlee's first over the Cowgirls in three tries as coach at Idaho. Wyoming falls to 3-7 with the loss.
"We usually have good battles with Wyoming, ever since my (Idaho State) days," Newlee said. "I have known (Wyoming coach) Joe (Legerski) a long time, we go way back. He tends to know what I am going to do and I know what he is going to do. It all comes down to the players who execute the plan, and I think ours really stepped up."
Neither team led by more than seven points in the game which featured four ties and three lead-changes, and was no more than a two-possession game for the final 33 minutes.
Idaho led for most of the second half, but after sophomore Alyssa Charlston put the Vandals ahead by six at 46-40 with 10:42 to play the Cowgirls went on a 9-0 run that lasted over four minutes and put Wyoming up 49-46.
Idaho freshman point guard Krissy Karr stopped the bleeding with a game-tying 3-pointer on Idaho's next possession, one of her three made 3's of the night, which sparked a 10-2 Vandal run putting Idaho in control for the rest of the game.
Karr finished with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and added seven rebounds three assists, a steal and just one turnover in 37 minutes of play.
Despite going scoreless in the first half, Idaho senior Ganeaya Rogers poured in a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added six rebounds (three on the offensive end), four assists and a steal.
"Like coach said I started attacking the basket more and going full speed and got to the basket and finished," Rogers said.
"I thought she (Rogers) came off the screens harder and got open and she got to the rim and that got her going," Newlee said. "I told her when she goes full speed she is hard to guard."
Sophomore Alyssa Charlston knocked down 7-of-9 shots to score 16 points.
Senior Keri Arendse had two points to go with seven rebounds, an assist and a steal in the game. Freshman Tayler Wieks finished with three points off the bench after knocking down a transition 3 in the first half, sophomore Ashley Walters had four blocks in seven minutes of play for Idaho, and senior Adrie Shiels had five points while playing extended minutes due to foul trouble.
"It was a total team effort today," Newlee said. "Everyone contributed and it kept us positive and that was huge for us."
Idaho hit 26-of-54 shots in the game, including 6-of-16 3-pointers. The Vandals turned the ball over just 13 times, their second lowest this season, and held a 38-36 advantage on the glass.
Wyoming shot 36.9 percent from the field but hit just 6-of-25 3-point attempts. Four of those were from Kaitlyn Mileto, who led all scorers in the game with 20 points.
The Vandals will visit Eastern Washington on Dec. 21 then take eight days off before facing North Dakota and Southern Miss at the Montana Lady Griz Holiday Classic on Dec. 29 and 30. Idaho returns to the Cowan Spectrum on Jan. 3 to face North Dakota.
