Second half drought ends Vandals

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A nearly 14 minute spell without a field goal and a 15-2 New Mexico State run, both in the second half, were too much for the Idaho women's basketball team to overcome Saturday in a 61-47 loss to the Aggies.

Idaho falls to 5-13 with the loss and 0-2 in Western Athletic Conference play, while NMSU improves to 4-13 and 1-1 in the WAC. Idaho has dropped its last five games.

The Vandals were led by the fifth double-double of the season from Alyssa Charlston, and her second straight, as she finished with a game-high 15 points and 13 rebounds. Krissy Karr was the only other Vandal to reach double figures, as she scored 12 points on 2-of-8 shooting.

Idaho used a 12-4 run in the first half to take a 26-23 lead into halftime, but after Karr hit a 3-pointer with 17:29 left in the second half, the Vandals didn't make another field goal her layup with 3:38 left broke a 13 minute 51 second drought.

The Vandals shot 26 percent in the game and just 21 percent in the second half, hitting just 6-of-28 shots from the field after the break. Idaho went 6-of-16 from 3-point range in the game and 14-of-53 from the field overall. The Vandals shot less than 60 percent from the free throw line for the second straight game, hitting 13-of-22 free throws.

The Aggies shot 42 percent from the field, hitting 23-of-54 shots including 5-of-13 3's. NMSU held a 42-37 rebounding advantage and turned 10 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.

NMSU was led by a double-double from Tabytha Wampler, who had 11 points and 10 boards in the game. Camila Rosen added nine-points and nine rebounds in the game and Kaitlyn Soto scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

Idaho freshman Tayler Weiks scored six points on 2-of-3 shooting from 3-point range, and Keri Arendse and Adrie Shiels each chipped in with four points. Vandal freshman Stacey Barr was ejected from the game with six seconds to play with a Flagrant 2 foul, and will be forced to sit Idaho's next game.

The Vandals return to action with three straight home WAC contests, starting Jan. 19 when Nevada visits the Cowan Spectrum. Idaho will host Fresno State on Jan. 21 and Utah State on Jan. 28 before hitting the road again.
