MOSCOW - It was rebounding and turnovers, again, that cost the Idaho women's basketball team in a 72-49 loss to Fresno State in the Cowan Spectrum Saturday night in Western Athletic Conference action.
The Vandals (5-14, 0-2 WAC) coughed the ball up 29 times, which led to 30 Fresno State points, and gave up 24 offensive rebounds, which turned into 17 more points for the Bulldogs (15-4, 3-0 WAC).
"They killed us on the O-boards," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "Twenty-four offensive boards, that killed us. We're soft and that's the problem. We've got to get tougher. It's in their mind. They know what they have to do but they don't do it. You've got to get tough, this is Division I basketball, that's just the way it is.
"Turnovers are just panic at the beginning. All they were doing was some trapping, nothing we haven't seen all year long. That's just panic from a young team. We've already seen that type of pressure, that's why we schedule teams we do in the non-conference, to get ready for this, which is disappointing to me that we did not handle it like we should have."
Idaho held Fresno State, which entered the game averaging 10.0 made 3-pointers per game, the second highest total in the NCAA, to just 4-of-18 (22 percent) shooting from long range, but the Bulldogs were able to do damage inside, scoring 42 of their 79 points in the paint.
The Vandals shot 43 percent from the field, and held Fresno State to just 35 percent, but the Bulldogs attempted 73 shots in the game while Idaho took just 44.
The Vandals, who were without freshman guard Stacey Barr due to suspension after picking up a flagrant 2 foul in Idaho's last game, trailed by just eight points with 13 minutes to play, but then Fresno State took over the game, outscoring Idaho 30-15 in the final seven minutes.
"That hurt us, depth-wise without question, especially against a team like Fresno State that plays four guards basically," Newlee said. "It certainly did hurt us but on the same token we've got enough players and we need to be able to compete for 40 minutes, not for 27."
Sophomore Alyssa Charlston led the Vandals in scoring with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added five rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Krissy Karr finished with 11 points and six assists and knocked down all three of her 3-point attempts. Senior Adrie Shiels finished with six points for Idaho and sophomore Ashley Walters had five points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Fresno State owned a 47-32 overall advantage in rebounding, and finished with 13 turnovers.
Idaho will return to the court Monday when it hosts Nevada at 6 p.m. in a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 19 but was postponed due to snow.
"Nevada is a good team, they're very athletic, very quick on the perimeter and physical inside," Newlee said. "Everybody knows right now to just attack us in the paint, throw it up there go chase it, because we won't block out, and we've got to change that. If we don't it's going to be a long WAC season for us. We need to get a split out of this home stand, get back on track and keep going."
