Volleyball sweeps MSU in opener

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Before the Idaho volleyball team left for the Wyoming Invite, Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said she was looking forward to seeing her team's weaknesses in Friday's season opener. But after an impressive sweep of Montana State, winning 25-15, 25-19, 25-21, Buchanan may have to keep waiting.

Sophomore setter Meredith Coba, making her first career start, finished with 40 assists and set Idaho (1-0) to a .398 hitting percentage, the team's highest in a match since November 13, 2004. Coba also added three kills of her own.

Distribution was efficient for the Vandals as well, as 15 of the team's 48 kills came from the middles, including 12 from Preseason Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Alyssa Schultz, who hit .579 and added four blocks and an ace. Junior Jessica Hastriter hit a career-high .435 and finished with 11 kills, three digs and two blocks. Senior Ashley Christman had 10 kills, seven digs, three blocks and hit .300 in the match. Sophomore Katelyn Peterson had nine kills and seven digs and hit .318.

True freshman defensive specialist Terra Varney had a team-high eight digs in the match, while sophomore Jenna Ellis, Peterson and Christman each added seven.

The Vandals finished with 48 kills and nine errors on 98 attempts. Idaho had three service aces, as Christman and Samantha Delmer each had one in addition to Schultz's ace, while MSU (0-1) had four. The Vandals held a 37-34 advantage in digs and a 7.0-3.0 advantage in blocks. Idaho held MSU to a .176 hitting percentage.

The Vandals continue the tournament Friday evening against Wyoming at 6 p.m. (PT). A free live web stream of that match is available at http://www.gowyo.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/082813aab.html.
