FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A flurry of first half goals pushed Idaho (11-4-1, 7-0-0) past Northern Arizona (7-8-1, 2-4-1), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon. Set pieces continue to be the calling card of the Vandals, as they scored on one free kick and two corners.
"I'm really proud of our players for coming in and being focused and executing well on a road game," said head coach Derek Pittman. "This is a tough weekend, playing at home on Friday then having to travel to Flagstaff and play a really tough NAU team on Sunday. I'm just really proud of how our team came out and executed our plan from the beginning.
"Getting the goals off of set pieces early was big for us. It opened up the game and gave our players that extra confidence they needed. It's another positive result and three more points in the Big Sky."
With the win, the Vandals have officially clinched a spot in the 2015 Big Sky Championships. Idaho's current seven-game winning streak sets a new program record, while its unbeaten streak of nine games extends its record. Idaho's 11 wins this season are tied for the second most in program history.
"Our goal from the start was to make the conference tournament," Pittman said. "To know that we've done that with three games left is very fulfilling. They're focused every time they step on the field. They have a determination and confidence about themselves, when we play the way we're capable of we're very dangerous."
The Vandals got on the board early and kept the pressure on for the remainder of the first half. Olivia Baggerly scored her fifth goal of the season in the 8th minute, burying a rebound after Amanda Pease's free kick came back off of the crossbar.Â
The Vandals doubled their lead in the 22nd minute, with Kavita Battan scoring her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Clara Gomez picked up a loose ball and sent it in to Battan, who spun and fired past the keeper.
Alyssa Lloyd found the back of the net on a corner kick in the 27th minute. Elexis Schlossarek served the corner to Kelly Dopke, who headed it back across the goal to Lloyd.Â
Dopke connected on a corner kick for her first collegiate goal nine minutes later, heading in the cross from Gomez.
"We're very good on set pieces because we have a number of players that are very good in the air," said Pittman. "We run some different sets to get Kelly open and get her free to utilize her abilities. It was nice to see her get her first goal of the season. She's a tremendous defender, so it's nice to see her get to contribute on the attack as well."
The Lumberjacks were able to find the back of the net once, scoring in the 86th minute.
With two assists on the day, Gomez now has 10 on the season, tying the program record (Emily Nelson – 2000). Amanda Poertner had another solid game, as she tied her career-high with eight saves.
The Vandals take on North Dakota and Northern Colorado next weekend. Check back with GoVandals.com for more information as the games approach.
"Now we can battle for the conference championship," Pittman said. "We need to be prepared for North Dakota on Friday then a really tough match at Northern Colorado on Sunday. All we can do is keep pushing, keep working hard."
