MOSCOW, Idaho—The Vandal offense was firing on all cylinders in Friday night's 93-58 exhibition win over Lewis-Clark State College in Memorial Gym. Senior Connie Ballestero paced Idaho with 17 points. Ballestero was efficient on the floor finishing 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
Idaho opened the night on an 8-0 run. Early 3's from Christina Salvatore and Ballestero helped the hot start. LCSC cut the Idaho lead to five by the first quarter media timeout, at 15-10. The Vandals opened up an 11-point lead on a 7-0 run following the stoppage. A Geraldine McCorkell layin put the Vandals up 35-17 midway through the second quarter. The Vandals scored the next nine points, holding the Warriors off the scoreboard for the next 3:26, extending the lead to 44-17. A 3-pointer from sophomore Bethany Krause gave Idaho a 47-23 lead going into the half.
"I thought we came out fast and had a good start," head coach Jon Newlee said. "Overall we did what we wanted to do on both sides of the ball."
The Vandal offense picked up where it left off in the second quarter. A Ballestero 3-pointer helped start a 5-0 run to open the third quarter. Her second three of the quarter gave the Vandals a 35-point lead at 60-25. A Mikayla Ferenz deep-ball put Idaho ahead by 38, 71-33, with 1:53 to play in the third.
With the game in well in hand the Vandals shot 7-of-14 over the final 10 minutes of play. Ferenz was 3-for-3 with seven points in the final period of play, to lead Idaho in the closing minutes.
The Vandals had six players reach double-figure scoring numbers. Ballestero's 17 points led all players, and if in a regulation contest, would have matched a career-high. Ali Forde totaled 16 points on the night adding six rebounds. McCorkell notched 13 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Taylor Pierce hit three 3's to help her to 11 points on the night. Ferenz and Salvatore each finished with 10 points.
Ballestero and Junior Karlee Wilson dished out a combined 11 assists on the night. As a team the Vandals recorded 21 helpers.
The Vandals outrebounded the Warriors, 42-24. Senior Renae Mokrzycki grabbed a team-high nine boards, including six on the defensive glass.
The Vandals are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 15, against UC Santa Barbara. The game is set for a 2 p.m. PT start.
