HONOLULU-For the second straight match the Vandals found themselves behind the proverbial eight ball early on at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Oregon State, helped by a .481 hitting percentage in the first set, swept Idaho 25-10, 25-19, 25-19.
Much like its previous match against Hawaii, Idaho was shy out of the gate against the Beavers. Oregon State started the night with eight of the match's first 10 points. The Beavers jumped out to an 18-5 lead, capitalizing on early Idaho errors. The Vandals had their chances in the set, totaling 23 attacks. OSU's defense answered with 12 digs and two blocks. Idaho finished the night with a total of 90 swings, while Oregon State finished with 47 digs and 6 team blocks.
“I thought we did a great job of isolating our middles,” head coach Debbie Buchanan pointed out. “We got a lot of one-on-ones, Torri [Crawford] had a lot of opportunities, but their libero did a great job. What we did from an isolation standpoint was the right thing, it just didn't work out tonight.”
The Vandals improved in the second set, hitting .265 compared to their -.130 in the first. Idaho gained a 7-4 lead in the set, but was unable to continue its early success. Three key errors helped the Beavers to an 11-9 lead, shifting momentum for the remainder of the match. Idaho would get as close as three points at 16-13, before dropping the set, 25-19.
The Silver and Gold's third set started off strong. Each side traded early points, seeing ties at three, four, five and six. A 4-0 run combined with another 3-0 run put OSU up 16-11. Idaho got to within two points at 20-18, before the Beavers tallied five of the next six points.
“From an offensive standpoint we are doing the right things,” Buchanan said. “Our passing was really good tonight we just need to cut our errors. We finished with fewer [errors] than last night, it is just Oregon State is a good team. We just needed to work a little harder to take some things away from them.”
Sophomore Becca Mau led the Vandals with eight kills and a .375 attacking average. Katelyn Peterson totaled six kills and seven digs, while Torrin Crawford and Tineke Bierma each had four kills. Sami Parris led the Vandals with 11 assists. Mary-Kate Marshall led all players with 15 kills for the Beavers.
As a team Idaho finished with a .212 hitting percentage (26 K, 13 E, 90 TA) and four aces. On the other side of the net Oregon State recorded a .366 average (50 K, 13 E, 101 TA) three aces. Both sides were even in blocks with six.
Idaho closes its stay at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Sunday against Wichita State. The Shockers swept Oregon State on Friday and play Hawaii later Saturday night. The match is set for 5:30 p.m. PT.
