Vandals Unable to Hold on

MOSCOW, Idaho—The Vandals returned to the court Saturday afternoon for their second match in less than 24 hours. Idaho controlled the first two sets 25-19, before UC Irvine came from behind to win the match 3-2.

Idaho was nearly flawless in the first two sets. The team committed just four attack errors and hit a combined .387. Sophomore Torrin Crawford had eight kills in 10 swings, recording zero errors through two sets. Redshirt freshman Sarah Sharp helped Idaho with seven kills, while DeVonne Ryter totaled four blocks.

Conversely, Idaho hit .139 in the final three sets, committing 13 attack errors.

“I think we hit that 'third game lull,'” head coach Debbie Buchanan admitted. “We played great for two sets and UC Irvine started to get hot. That is something we are going to have to learn. We have to be able to fight, reduce our errors and compete.”

Crawford finished with a career-best 13 kills. Sophomore Becca Mau matched Crawford with 13 kills, hitting .323 on the day. Sharp tallied 11 kills and five blocks. Junior Terra Varney led the team with 15 digs, passing the 650 mark for her career.

The Silver and Gold got offensive production from eight different players thanks to a combined 48 assists from Meredith Coba and Sami Parris.

UC Irvine's Ella Rosenfeld led the match with 15 kills, hitting .538 on the afternoon.

Idaho returns to Memorial Gym to close out the Idaho Volleyball Classic later this evening. The Vandals will take on Palouse rival Washington State at 7 p.m. PT.
