Sacrametno State Tops Idaho

SACRAMENTO—Multiple extended runs from Sacramento State proved to be costly for Idaho on inside The Nest. The Vandals dropped their fourth match in a row, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18, extending Idaho's current slump to four matches.

Sacramento State (12-11, 6-3) kept Idaho from gaining any kind of advantage throughout the night. The Vandals led by four early on in the first, proving to be their largest lead of the match. Every time Idaho looked to be gaining momentum the Hornets would take it right back.

"Early in the first set we were right there," head coach Debbie Buchanan explained. "We made some pretty tough plays and they made some tought digs. We won some of those plays, but over time I just think that they outplayed us."

An 8-0 Hornet run in the second set took the wind out of Idaho's sails. Idaho went from trailing by one, 10-9, to being down 18-9. Consecutive errors by Sacramento State helped the Vandals momentarily. The Hornets would jump back out to a nine-point lead, 20-11, before a 3-0 run closed the set at 25-15.

Idaho (7-14, 2-7) did its best to fight back in the final set. The Vandals got early kills from Kaela Straw and Torrin Crawford to build a 5-3 lead. Once again an extended run from Sacramento State set the tone for the set. The Hornets ran off six straight points to double up Idaho, 10-5. Both teams swapped 2-0 runs, seeing Idaho cut the lead down to 17-13. The Vandals made a late push with a 3-0 run to get to 22-18. A final 3-0 run would close things out for the Hornets, 25-18.

"At this point we have nothing to lose," Buchanan added. "We just need to go out there and play. We are so worried about every play. We are so worried about one error and we let that effect us. We just need to compete, like when we started the season. We do not have anything to lose. We just need to go out and play hard and get after it."

Straw led Idaho's offensive efforts with eight kills, hitting a team-best .389 percent. Sarah Sharp totaled six kills for Idaho the Vandals, while Crawford and Becca Mau each totaled five. As a team Idaho hit just .092 percent, its lowest mark the conference season.

Madeline Cannon led Sacramento State with a match-high 11 kills. Mikaela Nocetti added 10 kills for the Hornets. Sac State ended the night hitting .278 percent. The Hornets totaled 41 kills to Idaho's 27.

Idaho continues on the road on Saturday, heading up to Portland State. That match is set for 7 p.m. PT.
