Career-Highs Fuel Idaho

FULLERTON, Calif.—Career-highs from junior Geraldine McCorkell and senior Karlee Wilson helped the Vandals to an 88-86 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Monday. McCorkell led the game with 30 points for Idaho, while Wilson handed out 10 assists.

Similar to the season-opening win at Seattle U, Idaho found itself trailing late in the fourth quarter. Fullerton erased a 10-point second half lead Idaho had built to retake an 82-81 lead with 1:43 left in regulation. Mikayla Ferenz outletted to McCrokell who drilled her third 3-pointer of the game to get Idaho back in front, 84-82, with 1:35 to go. She added another two points to give Idaho a four-point lead with 45 seconds on the clock. Free throws from Wilson and Taylor Pierce locked up the victory in the final seconds.

"It was tough tonight," head coach Jon Newlee stated following the win. "Hats off to Cal State Fullerton. They shot the ball well tonight, a lot better than they have. [Iman] Lathan went crazy on us. She had a great game against San Diego and continued it tonight. I thought Daylee [Hanson] did a good job coming off the bench and defending her."

Idaho (2-0) overcame a sluggish start, opening the night 4-of-14 from the field. The Titans got out to a five-point lead, 14-9, with just over three minutes left in the first quarter. Pierce hit the first of her 3-pointers before the first-quarter buzzer to tie things up at 18.

Cal State Fullerton (0-2) jumped back out in front at the start of the second, using a 5-0 run to claim a 23-18 lead. The Titans gained their largest lead of the game, 34-25, with 5:53 to play in the half. Baskets from Agueda Trujillo and Cherita Daugherty got Idaho within four, trailing 34-30. An 11-0 run, featuring 3-pointers from Trujillo, Ferenz and Pierce put Idaho back on top 41-36 with just over two minutes to go. The Vandals would hold a 43-38 lead at the break.

The Silver and Gold got a pair for 3's from Pierce and McCorkell to begin the 3rd quarter. McCorkell's layup with 5:15 to go in the quarter handed Idaho a 10-point lead, 60-50. Latham scored four points in an 8-2 run by Fullerton to cut Idaho's advantage to 62-58. A McCorkell 3 gave the Vandals a seven point lead, 71-64, to end the third quarter.

Pierce closed the night 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, totaling 18 points. Trujillo was big for Idaho scoring 17 points in her 18 minutes off the bench. Ferenz and Daugherty totaled nine points apiece. Wilson added five points to go with her 10 assists to round out Idaho's scoring.

"Two games in a row that Agueda has come in and played big minutes for us at the four," Newlee noted. "Brooke [Reilly] is still trying to find her way after being out for a year. Ag is getting her chance and making the most of it."

Idaho's bench outscored Fullerton's 26-17. The Vandals did a good job in the transition game, scoring 10 fast-break points. The Titans were limited by the Vandal defense to just two points in transition.
Lathan led Fullerton with 27 points. Dhanyel Johnson snagged a game-high 10 rebounds. The Titans out-rebounded Idaho, 42-37.

The Vandals have a gap in the schedule with No. 17 Washington waiting in the wings. Idaho will head back to Seattle to take on the Huskies on Nov. 22.
