Vandals Start Strong in Vegas

LAS VEGAS—The Idaho women's tennis team opened its three match swing in Las Vegas with a 6-1 defeat of Youngstown State on Friday. The win is the fourth of the season for the Vandals and third in a row.

“It was great to get a win in our first outdoor match of the season,” head coach Mariana Cobra stated. “We were more disciplined today and played smarter in the important points.”

The Silver and Gold jumped out in front of the Penguins early, taking the doubles point. Rita Bermudez and Maria Tavares opened the match with a 6-3 win on the No. 2 court. Youngstown State bounced back with a 6-4 win on the No. 1 court. Lucia Badillos and Ana Batiri came through in the clutch for the Vandals, battling to a 7-6(3) win on the No. 3 court.

“Recently, we have put a lot of focus on the doubles point,” Cobra added. “To have the last four doubles points is definitely an improvement. It shows that we are starting to translate what we are doing in practice to our matches.”

Marianna Petrei boosted Idaho to a 2-0 lead with her opening 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles. Belen Barcenilla added the next point for Idaho with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 5 positon. Bermudez scored the clinching point for Idaho with her 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win on the No. 2 court.

The Vandals took five of the six singles matches, gaining wins from both Tavares and Batiri before the match concluded.

Idaho will take on UNLV on Saturday. The match is set for a 10 a.m. PT start.
