MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho (1-1-1) battled against an athletic Gonzaga (1-1-1) squad at a packed Guy Wicks Field, earning a hard-earned draw, 2-2. 1,109 fans were packed into the park, a new Idaho soccer record.
"I think the first half, I think we controlled the game pretty well in the first 25-30 minutes," said head coach
Derek Pittman. "Then I thought we made some errors that Gonzaga ultimately capitalized on. We had some good chances, we just didn't do a good job finishing them. But we bounced back. I'm really happy with the way the players responded and bounced back to equalize."
They needed to come back from deficit twice, and that they did.
Kayla Watanabe scored the second of the match in the 88
th minute, forcing the extra frames that would eventually go scoreless.
Josilyn Daggs got the play started with her long throw, which was flicked-on by
Sophia French. Watanabe was there on the end of the pass to score her first of the season.
Idaho wasn't without its chances in the overtimes. Freshman
Myah Merino found herself on the end of a great ball from
Clara Gomez, streaking toward the goal. She fired in a quality shot, but the Gonzaga keeper made a sprawling save, forcing a corner, to keep the game alive.
Idaho outshot Gonzaga, 25-17, including 8-6 in shots-on-goal.
Gonzaga got on the board first, scoring in the 33
rd minute. Sarah Carter sent in a nice ball from a free kick near midfield, finding the head of Aliyah Miller who flicked on a pass to the far post. Lauren Luke was waiting, finishing her second goal of the season.
The Vandals would level the score in the 48
th minute.
Megan Goo fired in a great shot that beat the keeper but got unlucky on the far post. Gomez reacted quickly and buried the rebound for her first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the 78
th minute, with Karley Baggerly scoring with her left foot after a series of cuts.
The Vandals get Sunday off from competition and return to action next Thursday at Hawaii. Check back with GoVandals.com next week for more information.
