MOSCOW, Idaho – It was a successful opening meet for the Vandals, as Idaho hosted the Clash of the Inland Northwest at the Idaho Golf Course on Thursday evening. The women dominated the field, while the men had a tremendous night and took second.
Five Vandals finished in the top nine on the women's side for 28 points. Eastern Washington finished second with 61 points. Balance was key for the women, with a freshman, two sophomores and two seniors scoring.
The Vandals were led by
Sierra Speiker in third. She completed the 4k course in 14:12.9.
Kara Story and
Halie Raudenbush were close behind. Story took fourth overall with a time of 14:15.6, while Raudenbush earned fifth after checking the tape with an identical time of 14:15.6.
Andrea Condie finished seventh overall and
Ally Ginther placed ninth. Condie finished in 14:18.2 while Ginther finished in 14:24.4.
The men took second with 40 points, finishing behind Gonzaga with 26 points. The men also got some quality results from across the board, but were led at the top by a group of youngsters, including three freshmen.
Grayson Ollar was the top finisher for the men, earning fourth among Division I athletes with a time of 18:41.1 in his first collegiate race.
Nathan Stark and
Drew Schultz came in soon after, taking seventh and eighth, respectively. Stark, the savvy veteran, completed the course in 18:49.8, while Schultz, a freshman, was just behind at 18:49.9.
Levi Wintz and
Dwain Stucker rounded out the scorers for the Vandals. Wintz finished 17
th at 19:10.8, while Stucker, a freshman, placed 18
th at 19:13.0.
