Oregon State Too Much For Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho—Idaho's non-conference season closed on a sour note Friday night against Oregon State. The Beavers, the 2016 Idaho Volleyball Classic champions, continued their streak of three set wins, taking the nightcap 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.

Oregon State (7-4) won all three of its tournament matches in straight sets. The Beavers outhit Idaho, .233 to .062 percent. OSU totaled 15 more kills than Idaho, finish the night with 44 kills on 120 attacks. All-Tournament selections Lanesha Reagan and Mary-Kate Marshall, tournament MVP, led Oregon State with 12 kills each. Lila Toner, also an All-Tournament selection finished with nine kills.

"I thought we competed well," head coach Debbie Buchanan said. "I think we did a good job of keeping our errors at eight or below for the first two sets. We made them have to beat us by getting a lot of kills. They had 17 kills for the first and second set. They have a lot of great arms and play great defense."

Idaho (5-7) was unable to sustain a steady attack throughout the night. Junior Becca Mau led the Vandals with eight kills. Sarah Sharp finished with seven. Idaho as a team finished with a .062 attack percentage, its second lowest of the season.

Sharp and Torrin Crawford represented Idaho on the All-Tournament team. Sharp finished the weekend with 41 kills and a .272 attack percentage, while averaging 3.42 kills per set. Crawford recorded 27 kills and a .458 hitting percentage to go with her 10 total blocks.

Idaho stayed with Oregon State throughout the first set, not letting the Beavers get too far out in front. Oregon State used a 6-1 run to close out the first set, taking it 25-16.

OSU carried that momentum into the second set, opening the frame with an 8-5 run. The Vandals battled back to tie the match at 12. A Sarah Sharp kill followed by an OSU error gave Idaho the 14-12 lead. Oregon State would continue with the lead scoring two points to every one Idaho point.

The Beavers jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the break, forcing Idaho to play from behind the entire set. The Vandals got within two points off an OSU attack error, making it 14-12. A 4-0 run from Oregon State put the Beavers ahead 22-14. Oregon State scored the last two points to take the set, 25-16.

"We are not going to play teams that can hit the ball inside the 10-foot line, not right away," Buchanan explained. "For us we did some great things defensively. I thought we got tougher as a team. If you look at this morning and this afternoon. Now it is a clean slate and we starting over."

Freshman Megan Ramseyer, continued to distribute the ball well Friday night. She totaled 23 assists, serving as the lone setter for the second straight match. Tara Eaton led the Vandals with 15 digs, replacing Terra Varney as the team's libero.

Idaho opens Big Sky play next Thursday at Montana State. The team will make its way back west, closing the weekend at Montana on Saturday. Idaho's first home Big Sky match is set for Sept. 29, against North Dakota.
