MOSCOW, Idaho – It was another heartbreaker for the Vandals on Friday night in the Kibbie Dome, as Idaho (5-8-2, 1-4-1) fell to Montana (9-5-2, 4-1-1), 1-0, in overtime.
The Idaho defense was strong all night, holding Montana to very few chances throughout. The centerback pairing of
Kelly Dopke and
Anna Rose Wiencek were dominant in the air all night, while
Claire Johnson and
Crosby MacKinnon kept the speedy Griz forwards at bay on the outside.
The entire Vandal squad got in on the action defensively, with forwards
Summer Kaneshiro,
Bridget Daley and
Myah Merino tracking back and causing havoc in the middle of the field.
Idaho's best opportunities came midway through the second half, both on free kicks from
Taylor Brust. The first saw the ball bounce out of the box to the feet of Johnson, who fired a powerful shot that beat the keeper but crashed the crossbar, shaking the framework. The second came on a shot from Brust, forcing the Griz goalkeeper to make a sprawling save in front.
The Griz scored on their only corner of the game, coming with two minutes remaining in the first overtime. After the Vandals failed to clear the ball off the line, Montana's Allie Lucas.
Makayla Presgrave had another fine night, making seven saves for the Vandals.
Next up the Vandals host Portland State, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. on Sunday in the Kibbie Dome.
