MOSCOW, Idaho—Idaho volleyball recorded its fifth win in a row on Saturday, closing out Eastern Washington in four sets. The Vandals came from behind, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, in front of a packed Memorial Gym. The win streak is Idaho's longest since 2015.
"We feel good as a team right now," senior
Torrin Crawford said after the win. "We are not satisfied with any of our wins. We of course love winning, but there is no satisfaction. I think we realize we can do more and play better."
Three Vandals finished with double-figure kills. Junior
Sarah Sharp led the match with 17 kills. Junior
Reece Carman closed out her night with 12 kills, while Crawford totaled 10 to go with her match-high five blocks.
Idaho (12-7, 7-1 BSC) fell behind the Eagles after dropping a close first set. Eastern Washington broke a 10-all tie with a 5-0 run to take control of the set. The Vandals battled to get within two late in the set, 23-21. Back-to-back kills from MaKenna Davis closed out the frame for the Eagles.
"Our errors were good in the first set," head coach
Debbie Buchanan commented. "I really want us to get to the point where we are pushing to control the match a little bit more. Right now we are kind of waiting to see what is going to happen. If we can just take a little bit more control that will be huge for us."
The Vandals led throughout the second and third sets, never relinquishing the lead. Idaho opened the second set with a 10-2 push. Crawford and Sharp led Idaho with five kills in the set to help Idaho tie the match headed to the intermission. The Vandals out-hit EWU, .424 to .250 percent.
Idaho got out to another quick start out of the break. Carman scored the first point of the frame to get Idaho rolling. EWU was forced into a timeout after the Vandals lead grew to 6-1. The Vandals used a 6-0 run late in the set to go up 10, 23-13.
DeVonne Ryter clinched the set for Idaho, handing the Vandals the 2-1 lead.
Eastern Washington (6-11, 3-5 BSC) reversed the start in the fourth set, opening with a 5-1 lead. Idaho used a 3-0 capped by Sharp to tie the set at 11. Sharp and
Kaela Straw helped Idaho to a second 3-0 push, to take a 14-12 lead. Eastern answered with a 5-0 run to regain a 17-14 lead. Three straight kills from Sharp helped Idaho retake the lead, 22-21.
Maura Donovan recorded her first career-kill to put Idaho at set point, 24-23. An EWU attack error closed out the night.
"I am really proud or team for battling all the way to the end," Buchanan continued. "We need to get back to playing our own game. I think we were off a little bit tonight. The great thing is, is we are having some other girls set up. Reece had a great night. Sarah again had another good night. We just have to keep working through this."
Alycia Wodke recorded her sixth match with 20 or more digs. She closed the night with 23.
Klaree Hobart added a season-high 16 digs.
Haylee Mathis led the Vandals with 46 assists.
Davis and Taylor Larsen led EWU with 13 kills each.
Idaho will take on Sacramento State next Thursday in Memorial Gym for a battle for the top spot in the Big Sky. The Hornets are off to the best start in school-history with an 8-0 conference record.
