POCATELLO, Idaho – It took another come-from-behind effort, but the Vandals got it done on the road again, defeating Idaho State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
"We didn't play well in the first half and Idaho State capitalized. They had a lot more energy and enthusiasm than we did, just battling for first and second balls and just competing," said head coach
Derek Pittman. "And our staff really challenged our team at halftime, made a few tactical changes that we needed to address, but more than anything we needed to light a fire under our group and get them to compete like they did on Friday night."
Idaho State got up early, scoring in the 20
th minute. But, much the same as Friday night in Ogden, the Vandals dug in.
Kelly Dopke leveled the score in the 57
th minute on a brilliant free kick from close to 30 yards out.
"Kelly has been working on set pieces quite a bit as of late, and we know she has the ability to do those things," said Pittman. "What bigger time could you ask for something like that? For her to step up and level the score for us."
Idaho kept the pressure on, outshooting ISU 12-4 in the second frame. The Vandals got the break they needed in the 77
th minute.
Taylor Brust picked the ball up just inside the Idaho half and sent it down the line to
Kaysie Bruce. Bruce sprinted past her defender and lifted in a cross to
Olivia Baggerly on the back post who finished to give Idaho the win.
"We just wanted to keep the momentum going, keep pushing," Pittman said. "We had a little bit of a lull after the goal but I thought some of the subs stepped in and did an excellent job.
Kaysie Bruce got to the sideline and served a quality ball, and Liv who's nursing a little bit of an injury got herself in the right spot and did what she's capable of doing."
The Vandals will host the Eagles of Eastern Washington on senior night on Friday at 7 p.m. The Vandals will need to win to have a chance at the Big Sky Tournament, with the results from the earlier games on Friday impacting Idaho's chances. "We have to get ready for a very good Eastern Washington team," said Pittman. "Being conference champs and set to host, they're going to come in looking to keep that unbeaten streak and we've just got to get ourselves prepared for it. We always have a great match against Eastern, expect Friday to be the same.
"It's also an opportunity for us to honor
Olivia Baggerly, our lone senior this year, with
Josilyn Daggs redshirting and coming back next year. We're going to send her off the right way and put in the performance that she deserves and compete for each other. I think it'll be an exciting night and hopefully everyone will come out and support us."
