GREELEY, Colo. – Another hard-fought match didn't go the Vandals' way, with Idaho (4-7-2, 0-3-1) falling at Northern Colorado (9-5-0, 3-2-0) 1-0 on Friday night.
"I think the biggest thing for me is that we challenged our players to be better this week defensively and I think we did that," said head coach
Derek Pittman. "I think we limited a very good Northern Colorado team to only a few chances. We were unlucky on the goal, but sometimes you have to earn your own luck and we didn't do that today. We created enough chances to win, enough chances to score, but hats off to Northern Colorado and their effort to get the result."
The Bears took the lead late in the 43
rd minute. Kaitlyn Meeder came in down the right side and fired from a very challenging angle, barely clearing
Makayla Presgrave's hands, to give Northern Colorado the lead just before the break.
Presgrave made six saves on the night, tying the most she's made in a game this season. The back line did its part to keep the speedy Bears at bay, with
Claire Johnson and
Crosby MacKinnon playing well at outside back.
"I thought
Claire Johnson played fantastic in the back," Pittman said. "I thought
Crosby MacKinnon did an excellent job. Again, the entire back line was much more organized. I thought
Hadley Sbrega was very good and even some of the players off the bench gave us some quality minutes. We just have to build on this and get ready for North Dakota on Sunday."
Next up is a trip to Grand Forks to take on North Dakota at 10 a.m. Pacific on Sunday. Fans can follow along on Twitter, @VandalsSoccer, or on the PlutoTV app.
