@VandalsWBB Opens 2017-18 Campaign

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Friday marks the official start of the 2017-18 women's basketball season. The Idaho women will be at Colorado State for a 4:30 p.m. PT tip.

The Game: Idaho opens the season with a visit to Colorado State on Friday. It is the second consecutive season Idaho opens on the road.


 
About The Vandals: Idaho returns its three top-producers from a year ago. Mikayla Ferenz, Geraldine McCorkell and Taylor Pierce make up the core of the Vandal lineup. The Vandals won their first postseason game in 31 years last year, advancing to the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational. The team has five new faces this season, including four freshmen.
 
About the Rams: CSU is coming off its fourth consecutive regular-season Mountain West title in 2017. The Rams were picked to finish third in the Mountain West preseason poll. Hannah Tvrdy is the Ram's top returner. She was sixth in the MWC last year with 34.59 minutes per game.
 
Last time: Idaho defeated Lewis-Clark State College in exhibition play, 82-67. The Vandals had four players score in double figures and shot 41.9 percent from the field.
 
Openers: Idaho is 4-5 in season openers under Coach Newlee. Last season Idaho opened with a 68-64 win at Seattle U. Overall, the Vandals are 24-19 on opening day.
 
GAME Connections: CSU guard Stine Austuglen is the younger sister of former Vandal Maren Austgulen.

Scouting the Rams
• Colorado State returns three of its five starts from last season and seven letterwinners overall
• The Rams, like the Vandals, are not afraid to shoot the deep ball. CSU ranked second in the MWC (45th NCAA) with 7.5 3FGM last season
• They also defended the 3-ball well last season, ranking 15th in the NCAA with a 27.7 3FG defense
• The Rams held their opponents to a 53.6 scoring average last season, fifth best in the NCAA
