Vandals Drop Match to Seattle U

Back-and-forth contest in the Dome

MOSCOW, Idaho – It was a wild one in the Kibbie Dome on Monday afternoon, with Seattle U (3-2-0) escaping with the 5-3 win over Idaho (2-3-1).

"I'm just disappointed, to be honest with you," said head coach Derek Pittman.  "I thought our players came out the right way and executed our game plan very well for the first 30 minutes or so.  But this is part of our growing process.  Our young players have got to understand, and this young team has to understand, that every minute matters."

Idaho got the scoring started in the 25th minute with Kelly Dopke scoring her second of the season, off a Bridget Daley corner kick.

The Vandals would double their advantage in the 33rd minute, with Morgan Crosby firing in a beautiful shot from just outside the 18-yard box.

Seattle U closed out the half with a pair of goals of its own.  Leahi Manthei scored her first of four on the night in the 34th minute, tucking a nice volley into the side of the net to cut the Idaho lead in half.  The Redhawks needed less than five minutes to level the score, doing so on a penalty kick.

Seattle U also go things moving quickly to start the second half, scoring on a free kick in the 51st minute.  The Redhawks doubled their advantage to 4-2 in the 60th minute, with Manthei completing her hat trick.

Claire Johnson brought the Vandals back to within one in the 67th minute.  Johnson controlled the errant clearance from the Redhawk defense and took a couple of touches before sending in a lofted shot from long range that managed to get just past the outstretched finger tips of the Seattle U goalkeeper.

The Redhawks would add some insurance in the 77th minute, making it 5-3.

Next up for Idaho is a trip to Eugene to take on Oregon on Friday night at 7 p.m.  Check back with GoVandals.com this week for more information.
