Big Sky Cross Country Championships This Weekend

Vandals head to Championships with high hopes

LIVE RESULTS | CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

SACRAMENTO, Calif.
– The 2018 Big Sky Cross Country Championships are here, with Idaho making the trip to Sacramento this weekend.  The men's 8k competition gets going at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while the women's 5k begins at 11 a.m.

FOLLOW: Live results, provided by Record Timing, can be accessed through the link at the top of the article or the schedule page.

LAST YEAR: Last year, both sides had their best finishes since rejoining the Big Sky Conference.  The women placed third overall, while the men took fourth.  Krista Story earned All-Big Sky accolades, finishing seventh overall.  Story will be making her return this weekend, after missing the last three races.

PRESEASON PROJECTIONS: Both squads were projected to finish one spot below their 2017 finishes.  The women were picked fourth by the Conference's coaches, while the men were selected fifth.

WHERE THEY'VE BEEN: Both squads have been outstanding in 2018.  The women have won two of the four races they've competed in, posting a perfect score of 15 in the season-opener at home in the Clash of the Inland Northwest.  On the year, the women have only finished behind a Big Sky opponent once, after a tough race in Colfax early on.

The battle between Kara Story and Andrea Condie has been outstanding.  The duo has gone one-two for the Vandals in all four races this year, with each coming out ahead twice.  With the addition of Krista Story to the mix, the Vandals are poised for an exceptional performance this weekend.

The men have seen steady improvement throughout the year, and have been the top-finishing Big Sky at every competition they've been at.  The unit came up big at its last regular season meet, finishing fifth among a tremendously talented pool at the Bronco Invitational in California.

Skylar Ovnicek has been the leader for the men for most of the season, taking first for the team in three-of-four meets.  Fabian Cardenas was able to edge Ovnicek at the Cougar Classic, and has finished second for the squad twice.

COMING UP: This meet will serve as a precursor to the 2018 NCAA West Regional Championships, which will also take place in Sacramento, on November 9.
