Vandals Top Idaho State in ICCU Battle of the Domes

MOSCOW, Idaho— Haylee Mathis Surpassed 2,500 career assists, while Sarah Sharp (.519) and DeVonne Ryter (.729) had zero errors on the night as the Idaho women's volleyball team defeated Idaho State (25-10, 25-18, 25-16) in the year-long ICCU Battle of the Domes competition on Thursday.

Needing 25 assists to hit the 2,500-mark going into the night, Mathis tallied 38 assists to help her move up in the Idaho volleyball record books. Mathis surpasses Kellie Morgan (1987-89) moving to the eighth spot in career assists in Idaho volleyball history.

Seniors Sharp and Ryter were also on fire on Thursday night. Sharp notched 14 kills with zero errors on a .519 clip, while Ryter (.729) struck down eight kills on zero errors with two service aces and three blocks. Kaela Straw added 11 kills to go along with three digs and two blocks. Reece Carman tacked on nine kills, two digs and four blocks. The Vandals defense held the Bengals to a .088 hitting percentage.

First Set Summary
The Vandals (15-8, 9-2) dominated the opening set taking an early 10-6 lead after a kill from senior Reece Carman. ISU (12-12, 6-5) would rattle off a couple of points, but The Vandals would not relinquish the lead, going on a 7-0 run giving them set point, 24-9. Idaho finished off set one on a kill by Ryter.

Second Set Summary
The score was tied at 8-8 before the Vandals could hold onto a lead in the second set. The Bengals were forced to call a timeout with the score at 16-12 after a kill form Sharp and an Idaho State attacking error. After the timeout, another kill from Sharp sparked a 6-2 run by the Vandals, which at that point Idaho was ahead 23-15. Despite a late rally by ISU, the Vandals held off the Bengals taking the set, 25-18.

Third Set Summary
The Bengals took an early one-point lead, 11-10, in the third set before Idaho came on the attack, tying the set at 12-12. The Vandals would then take the lead by as many as five points at 18-13. Three-straight points gave Idaho a seven-point edge. Idaho closed out the set, 25-16, after two kills from Nikki Ball.
