Portland, Ore.—Senior outside hitters
Sarah Sharp and
Reece Carman helped Idaho women's volleyball to a four-set victory over the Vikings of Portland State Friday night at the Viking Pavilion.
"Anytime we can get a win on the road is huge," Idaho head coach Buchanan said. "I didn't think we played extremely disciplined tonight, but, when it came time to make the push we were able to do it."
Sharp led the Vandals with a season-high of 21 kills on a .409 clip to go with five blocks. Carman wasn't too far behind as she added 15 kills on a .406 clip, together they erred five times in the match.
Haylee Mathis led the team in assists with 50, two service aces and six digs on the night.
Alycia Wodke collected 27 digs while
Delaney Hopen had 12 and
Sam Swayze grabbed 10.
DeVonne Ryter laid down nine kills with eight digs.
Kaela Straw also had nine kills and picked up three digs.
Nikki Ball led in blocks as she assisted on seven blocks.
FIRST SET SUMMARY
Portland State took a 5-1 lead over Idaho to begin the first set after a Vandal error, and four Viking kills. The Vikings stayed ahead forcing an Idaho time at 12-7. After the timeout, Idaho found some fire and went on a 4-0 run after three straight kills, but the Vikings answered back with a 4-0 run of their own and led 16-11. Led by the seniors, Idaho used a combination of blocks and kills to come within two points, 23-21, before Portland State could end the set at 25-23.
SECOND SET SUMMARY
Fueled by a kill from top performer, Carmen, the Vandals used a 5-0 run to put distance between them and the Vikings as the score read, 12-7. Idaho dominated the second half of the second set increasing their lead to seven points, 17-10, on three straight Vandal kills by Sharp and Straw. Allowing the Vikings only six more points, Idaho took the set 25-16.
THIRD SET SUMMARY
A 5-2 lead set the tone for Vandals early in the third set. Despite trading points, the Vandals held onto a two-point lead until a 5-0, which included two kills by Sharp, increased their lead to 11-6. Idaho would maintain a comfortable distance, leading by as much as six points. The set concluded with five straight points for the Vandals, 25-15.
FOURTH SET SUMMARY
Portland State got off to a quick 5-2 lead to open the fourth set after going on a 4-0 run. The Vikings keep the momentum going as they increased their lead by three on two kills and service ace, 8-3. After calling a timeout, Idaho pumped out three back-to-back points to come within a point, 8-9. The Vandals would battle and knot up the match, 14-14. Idaho grabbed the lead and stayed in front until the score was tied up at 24-24 after a Viking kill. Idaho and Portland State traded points, but Idaho would prevail and score three straight points to conclude the match at 28-26.
