MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho men's basketball (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gym, taking down Bethesda University (0-5), 87-59.
THE GAME
Idaho wasted no time getting out to a double-digit lead that kept growing all game long. The Vandals shot 54.7 percent (35-64) from the floor on the game and finished with 21 assists on those 35 field goals. Idaho also dominated the glass, outrebounding Bethesda 49-33.
Cameron Tyson led the way for Idaho yet again, finishing with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He connected on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, and has now hit at least five 3's in all three games this year. Prior to Tyson, freshmen Vandals had only ever hit five-plus 3's in a game three times in program history.
Scott Blakney recorded his first career double-double. He scored 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and added 12 rebounds, including five offensive.
Trevon Allen had a balanced day with 12 points, five rebounds and six assists.
THE NAME
Geno West. West made his first career start on Sunday, logging 25 minutes in the win. He scored a career-best 13 points and tied his career-high with three rebounds. He really stole the show with his court vision, dishing out eight assists, also a career-high.
"I thought
Geno West, coming back from that earlier concussion, to come in and have eight assists and one turnover and to take care of his basketball the way that he did, that was a good effort from him tonight," said
Don Verlin.
"I thought he made a number of good passes. I thought he picked his seems very well tonight. I was happy the way he controlled the pace of the game and the way he handled himself on the floor."
THE NOTES
The Vandals move to 1-2 on the season and travel to Boise for the Vandal Holiday Hoops Showcase next.
Blakney recorded a career-high in rebounds (12), while West recorded career-highs in points (13) and assists (8).
Cassius Smits-Francisco also recorded career-highs in points (6) and rebounds (11).
Four players scored in double-figures for the first time since having five players do so at Weber State last season.
