HOUSTON - All six Idaho divers are poised to score Thursday, in the three-meter springboard competition at the 2018 WAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Three Vandals made the championship final, while three more earned a spot in the consolation final. Idaho also qualified seven swimmers for scoring heats in individual events, to go along with the 200-yard freestyle relay on tap for the evening session.
Maren Seljevold posted the second-highest score in prelims of three-meter diving at 289.90. Seljevold will be joined in the A Final by teammatesÂ
Emi Smith (sixth; 268.00) and
Hailey Kessler (seventh; 267.30).
Janelle Lucas will look to win the consolation final after just missing the cut and qualifying ninth at 263.30, a point and a half behind eighth place.
Heather Carbon (12th; 243.05) and
Indiya Williams (15th; 233.85) will also dive again in the consolation final.
Leah Fisk cruised into the A Final of the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.86, good for fourth-fastest in school history. Fisk recorded the field's fastest split at the 250-yard mark before conserving energy and easily qualifying in seventh. The junior, who holds each of Idaho's top four times in the event, would become the school's highest all-time conference finisher in the 500 freestyle with a top-four performance.
Sarah Hall and
Brianna Lucien can add to Idaho's team score in the consolation final after qualifying ninth and 1th, respectively. Hall missed the championship final by the slimmest of margins as her 4:58.80 was one one-hundredth of a second off the eighth-place time.
Dhani Freeland used a strong front half to qualify for the championship final of the 200-yard individual medley in a career-best 2:04.72.
Cara Jernigan finished ninth (2:05.77) and will be joined in the consolation final by
Emily Kliewer (15th; 2:07.60).
Maryann Kok Cher Ling also grabbed a scoring swim with a 16th-place finish in prelims of the 50-yard freestyle. Kok Cher Ling touched the wall in 24.05, just ahead of teammate
Aileen Pannecoucke (24.07). Both Vandals posted season bests in prelims.
Idaho looks to hold its grip on second place as Grand Canyon and New Mexico State on the Vandals' heels. GCU, with strengths in the sprints, will aim to capitalize on the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay. Idaho's positioning in diving, along with big swims in the 500 freestyle, can help keep the Antelopes at bay.
