FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.
– Idaho wrapped competition at the 2018 Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, with one individual title and a number of top finishes.

"I'm so proud of this team," said director of track and field/cross country Tim Cawley.  "They went out and competed so hard.  They showed their toughness over these last couple of days.

"We had so many kids, I can't even count, that beat their ranks.  And that's what we're looking for.  We had a bunch more individual scorers and a ton of lifetime bests, and you're not going to ask for more than a lifetime best.  It was just an exciting meet to watch."

Zachary Short dominated the shot put competition with a career-best throw of 18.10 meters (59-4.75).  Short was ranked second in the event headed into the weekend, but exploded to win by 0.66 meters.

A pair of Vandals scored in the men's 400-meters, led by Kaizer Gillispie.  Gillispie finished in third to earn All-Big Sky Honorable Mention with a season-best time of 47.14 seconds, while Nik Chappee took sixth at 48.05 seconds, also a season-best.  Both would team up with Mack Baxter and Rikki McCaw to earn bronze in the 4x400-meter relay with a season-best time of 3:13.03.

Karina Moreland earned All-Big Sky Honorable Mention in the triple jump, finishing third with a season-best leap of 11.98 meters (39-3.75), just one one-hundredth of a meter away from a personal best.  Jordyn Rauer, ranked 11th in the event coming in, finished eighth with a career-best jump of 11.53 meters (37-10.00).

Another duo scored for Idaho in the women's 3000-meters.  Andrea Condie took fifth, her same finish as yesterday in the 5k, completing the race in 10:11.61.  Kara Story finished eighth with a time of 10:17.60.

Kasin Pendergrass-Anderson scored for Idaho again, finishing fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 15.02 meters (49-3.50), while teammate Jonny Magee earned a point with his eighth place finish in the event with a personal-best leap of 14.54 meters (47-8.50).  Faith Dilmore picked up a fifth-place finish in the women's mile, completing the race in 5:11.87.

Ben Doucette earned seventh in the 60-meter hurdles final at 8.21 seconds.  Kaleala Bass picked up a point for Idaho, taking eighth in the 800-meters at 2:14.95.

The Idaho men finished 6th with 45 points.  The women would go on to finish 9th with 31 points.

"It's the most points we've scored, men and women, at the indoors," Cawley added. " It's the highest finish, men and women, at the indoor championships since we've been back in the Big Sky.  They beat their preseason ranks, which is part of what we're looking for, to beat our ranks going in.  Really excited, it was fun.  A young team, building strong, we're just excited to see what happens in the outdoor championships when we're hosting them in Moscow in May."
