OGDEN, Utah—Idaho junior
Maria Tavares helped lead the Vandals last week six combined wins on her way to picking up her first career Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week honor.
Tavares partnered with
Marianna Petrei at No. 1 doubles, putting together three wins. Individually, she went 3-1 out of the No. 2 position.
Tavares started the week helping Idaho defeat Sacramento State 7-0 in a rescheduled match. The junior, paired along with Petrei, earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and carried the momentum into singles play with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot.
She had to fight back to secure her win at No. 2 against Northern Arizona. Tavares dropped the first set on her way to win the three-set thriller (4-6, 7-6(6), 7-5).
Idaho closed out the week with a 6-1 win against Idaho State as the native of Porto, Portugal earned another sweep at No. 1 doubles and won in straight sets at No. 2 singles.
The Vandals return to action with a non-conference match against Montana State, set for Mar. 24.
