MOSCOW, Idaho—Idaho men's tennis waited all season to play in front of a home crowd. They had to wait a little bit longer to get the first home win of the season on Wednesday. The Vandals battled to 4-3 win over Eastern Washington, wrapping up the Big Sky season.Â
Four of the day's six singles matches went all three sets, extending the Senior Day match into the early dusk.Â
All eyes turned to the No. 2 court in the waning moments of the match. Tied at three the winner was decided between Idaho's
Felipe Fonseca and EWU's
Scott Paz. Fonseca, playing his final home match, fought hard to win the first set 7-6(5). Paz evened the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. The deciding set bounced back and forth, playing to a 4-4 tie. Fonseca won the final two games, prevailing 6-4 to pick up the win.Â
The Vandals found themselves in a 1-0 hole to start singles play, having dropped the doubles point to open the match.Â
Carlos Longhi Neto wiped away the deficit, pulling Idaho back to even with his 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3.
Lucas Coutinho gave Idaho the lead, winning his fifth consecutive match. He improved to 8-3 in the Big Sky with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Esteban Santibanez put the Vandals up 3-1 with his win at No. 6 (6-2, 4-6, 6-1).
Eastern claimed a pair of wins to stay alive in the match. Victor Pereira recorded EWU's first singles win at No. 4. Jeremy Field tied the match at No. 1, outlasting
Mark Kovacs 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Vandals earned the No. 1 seed in next week's Big Sky Championship, finishing with a 10-1 conference record. Idaho has one final tune-up before heading off to Phoenix. The team will close the regular season at Boise State on Saturday. Â Â Â
