Vandals return to the NCAA Tournament

PHOENIX—Sequels often have a hard time of living up to the original, but don't tell that to the Vandal men's tennis team. Idaho defeated Montana in the Big Sky Championship, 4-0, for the second year in a row at the Phoenix Tennis Center.

The Vandals have now won three of the last four Big Sky titles. Saturday's championship marks the 13th for the program dating back to its first Big Sky championship in 1966.

"This team is relentless," head coach Abid Akbar explained after the win. "They have been confident since day one. They came out blazing yesterday and today. They have made the whole Vandal family proud."

Idaho, fresh off watching its counterparts win their fourth championship in the morning, played inspired in doubles at the start of the afternoon. Montana took the first match at No. 2, putting the pressure on Idaho. The Vandals responded with a pair of 6-4 wins from Mark Kovacs and Carlos Longhi Neto and the team of Felipe Fonseca and Guilherme Scarpelli.

The bottom courts carried the load for the Vandals in singles. Idaho picked up the first three wins, removing any kind of late-match drama.

Junior Lucas Coutinho gave the Vandals a 2-0 lead right out of the gate. His 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 triggered Idaho's commanding performance. Scarpelli brought Idaho to victory's doorstep, registering a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4.

Sophomore Esteban Santibanez had the honors of closing out the win for the Vandals. He took down Montana's Max Korkh 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.

"The top six in the Big Sky has always been very even," Akbar added. "These guys live for April and the pressure brings out the best of them. This team will do anything for each other and today they fought together."

Idaho will now look forward to its return trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team will find out its destination and opponent on Tuesday, May 1, when the tournament field is announced (2:30 p.m. PT).
