07/09/2018

MOSCOW, Idaho—Former Idaho women's basketball standout, Geraldine McCorkell, has signed her first professional contract, agreeing to continue her basketball career with the Norrköping Dolphins in Sweden.

"I am very fond of this opportunity and have always dreamed about playing professional basketball outside of Australia," McCorkell said in Norrköping's announcement. "I searched around Google and Youtube and got pictures on Norrköping - it seems to be a great city."
Norrköping is located 163 kilometers southeast of the Swedish capital city, Stockholm. The team plays in the country's top league, Basketligan dam. The Dolphins finished last season seventh in the standings with an 8-14 record.

"I am really proud of Geri for all she accomplished as a Vandal," Idaho head coach Jon Newlee commented. "Being able to continue her career professionally is awesome. I'm sure she will have a fantastic experience at the pro level as so many of my players have had. She will be a great representation of our Vandal program at the highest level."

McCorkell, a four-year post player at Idaho, will join the Dolphins in August.  She closed her career at Idaho with 1,552 career points, good for eighth all-time. She finished last season 12th in the NCAA with an 88.8 free throw percentage. She made her mark in the Idaho record books from the free-throw line as well. McCorkell ranks fifth all-time at Idaho with an 81.6 career free throw percentage.

McCorkell played in 128 career games for the Vandals, ranking third in program history. She recorded 17 double-doubles throughout her career. McCorkell averaged 6.1 rebounds per game, totaling 781 for her career (7th at Idaho). She averaged a career-high 16.5 points per game last season, raising her career average to 12.1.

The jump to the professional ranks has become a growing trend for former Vandals. McCorkell is the latest to take her talents overseas, joining former Vandals like Alyssa Charlston (Luxembourg), Ali Forde (Germany), Stacey Barr (Australia), Yinka Olorunnife (Spain/Australia), Rachele Kloke, (Australia) and Bianca Cheever (Australia).
