SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The exhibition season is underway for Idaho, with the Vandals dropping their opener at Pac-12 opponent Utah, 1-0.
 
It was a tough bounce that led to the game's lone goal.  After a failed clearance, The Utes turned on the counterattack quickly and sent Paola Van Der Veen in on net.  Van Der Veen was able to send a lofted shot past Makayla Presgrave to give Utah the 1-0 advantage in the 22^nd minute.
 
Idaho's best chance came late in the first half, with Kaysie Bruce picking up the ball by herself at the top of the 18-yard box.  After settling, she fired in a shot, but the Utah goalkeeper was able to make the save to preserve the lead.
 
Juliana deTar was solid in the start for the Vandals, firing two shots in the first half.  Myah Merino, Claire Johnson and freshman Savannah Foster had the other three shots for Idaho.
 
Utah outshot Idaho on the day, 23-6, including 9-4 in shots on goal.  Presgrave had an exceptional night in net, making eight saves, one short of her season-best a year ago.
 
In total, seven Vandals made their fall debuts, including four freshmen, two junior college transfers and one redshirt freshman.  GoVandals.com will have more from the exhibition early next week.
 
Next up for the Vandals is a home exhibition against Central Washington at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the Kibbie Dome.
