OGDEN, Utah - Idaho volleyball senior
Kaela Straw earned Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending Aug. 26, the conference announced Monday. Straw was named Idaho Volleyball Classic Tournament MVP after leading the Vandals to a 2-1 mark during the season-opening weekend. Straw led the Big Sky in hitting percentage (.420) and kills per set (4.46) for the week. It is the second Big Sky Player of the Week Award of her career.
Straw set a career high with 27 kills Saturday, against New Mexico - the most by a Vandal since 2012. It was the Big Sky single-match high last week and tied for the 10th most in a single match by a Big Sky student-athlete since Idaho rejoined the league in 2014. The Spokane, Wash., native recorded three of the league's top-12 individual single-match hitting percentages last week, including an Idaho season best of .524 Friday, against Santa Clara.
The Vandals knocked off Santa Clara (3-0) and Grand Canyon (3-2) before dropping a five-set match to New Mexico in the tournament finale. Idaho returns to action Friday and Saturday, at the Pepperdine/CSUN Challenge.
