DENVER – Idaho student-athletes swept the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week Awards, the league announced Tuesday. Freshman
Katie Hale was named the swimmer of the week, while senior
Janelle Lucas earned diver of the week honors for the second consecutive week.
Â
Hale claimed the first conference award of her career after winning three individual events and a relay victory in helping the Vandals defeat Grand Canyon and Simon Fraser Saturday, in a tri-dual. The Park City, Utah, native won the 50-yard freestyle (23.85), 100-yard backstroke (57.48) and 200-yard backstroke (2:06.19), in addition to leading off the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
Â
Hale clocked season bests in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while posting the fastest times in the WAC last week in all three of her individual events. She led off the relay with a 26.37 split in the 50-yard backstroke, faster than Idaho's leadoff leg at the past three conference championships.
Â
Lucas earned her second diver of the week award in as many weeks and the fourth of her career. She scored a career-best 305.75 to win the 1-meter springboard event against Grand Canyon and Simon Fraser. Her score is the second-highest 1-meter total in program history. Her 305.95 on 3-meter was good for third place. It is the first time in her career Lucas has eclipsed the 300-point plateau on both boards at the same meet.
Â
The Vandals will close the regular season with a split squad effort. The swimmers will head to Oregon State and the divers will get an opportunity to train and compete platform, in addition to the springboard events, at the Lumberjack Spring Diving Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz. The WAC Championships will take place Feb. 27-March 2, in Houston.
