SALT LAKE CITY - Former Idaho football standouts Matt Linehan and Austin Rehkow made the final 52-man roster for the
Salt Lake Stallions in the inaugural season of the
Alliance of American Football, the team announced Wednesday. Linehan and Rehkow will play for former Vandal head coach Dennis Erickson. The Stallions begin their
10-week regular season Feb. 10, at Arizona. Salt Lake will play its home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Linehan is one of three quarterbacks on the roster. He will compete for playing time with Josh Woodrum (Liberty) and Austin Allen (Arkansas). The former four-year starter wrapped up his Idaho career in 2017, breaking the school record for career completions (899) and finishing second in passing yards (10,772). Linehan led the Vandals to victory in the 2016 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl as a junior, earning game MVP honors after throwing for 381 yards and four touchdowns. Prior to his senior year, Linehan was named to preseason watch lists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Manning Award.
Rehkow is the Stallions' lone punter. A two-time All-American and four-time first-team all-conference performer for the Vandals, Rehkow participated in training camp and preseason games with the Buffalo Bills prior to the 2017 NFL season. The Spokane, Wash., native rewrote the Idaho record books. Rehkow owns the program's two best single-season punt averages (47.8 yards per punt in 2013 and 2014), as well as the career record (45.8 yards per punt). He also handled kicking duties for the Vandals, scoring 344 career points - second-most in program history and the most by a kicker.Â
Erickson will lead the Stallions in their first season. A two-time Big Sky Coach of the Year while leading Idaho to its first run of extended success from 1982-85, Erickson went on to win two national championships while coaching at Miami. His career also includes stops in the NFL and various Pac-12 schools. Earlier this month, Erickson was announced as a member of the 2019 College Football Hall of Fame Class. He will be formally inducted Dec. 10.
