COLFAX, Wash. – Idaho cross country closed out the season in style, by beatings its ranks at the NCAA West Regional. The men took ninth overall, the best finish by the Vandals in at least a decade, while the women stepped up to finish 14
th.

"I'm so proud of both teams," said director of track and field/cross country,
Tim Cawley. "Coming in ranked 15
th in the region and finishing ahead of that, beating the rank, that's exciting. Â That's what we look for here."

The men were led by
Dwain Stucker in 44
th with a time of 30:46.1 over the 10k course.Â
Drew Schultz was next in 60
th in 31:04.3.

Much the same as the women at the Big Sky Championships, the men ran an incredible team race.Â
Tim Stevens and
Ben Shaw were next, in 72
nd and 73
rd, respectively. Stevens finished in 21:17.8, while Shaw was close behind at 31:18.7.Â
Gabriel Dinnel was the final scorer, in 80
th, at 31:22.0. The men were ranked 15
th coming into the meet.

The women's squad placed 14
th, despite entering the meet ranked 15
th.Â
Malaina Thacker led the Vandals in 53
rd with a time of 21:02.0 over the 6k course.Â
Kara Story was not far behind in 60
th, with a time of 21:09.3.

Nathalia Campos,
Krista Story and
Kelsey Swenson battled for the final three spots for Idaho. Campos took 76
th in 21:21.1, while
Krista Story was right behind in 77
th at 21:21.6. Swenson was right in the pack, and took 79
th in 21:21.9.

"The men finishing in ninth, that's big time," said Cawley. "Their goal was to be top-10 at the regional championships and to pull it off just took a lot of grit. They just really buckled down and finished strong.

"The women came out and ran strong.  It was just a great way to end the season, especially after finishing second in conference. Really proud to be a Vandal today, they did fantastic. Everything's moving in the right direction. Really excited."
