Washington Distance Runner Joins Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho
- The University of Idaho Track & Field program is excited to announce the signing of Shea Mattson of Selah High School in Selah, Washington. Mattson is one of the top distance runners in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
 
Mattson recently was the runner-up at the Washington State Cross Country Championships, running 15:24.2 in the race over the 5000-meter course. He had strong performances throughout his senior cross country season, resulting in eight wins. Mattson won the District 5/6/GNL Championship meet at the Apple Ridge course in Yakima, setting a course record of 14:49.0 for 3 miles. He was eighth in the Washington State Cross Country Champion­ship meet as a junior. Mattson also placed 29th at the Nike North­west Regional Championships, a combination of the best runners from seven states.
 
Mattson has also had success on the track. He had an out­standing meet at the Washington State Track & Field Champion­ships as a junior. He placed second in the 1600m in 4:21.53 and third in the 3200m in 9:17.24, both personal bests. He also has a personal best of 1:59.21 in the 800m. Mattson also qualified for the state championships as a sophomore in the 3200m, he placed seventh.
