Strong defensive effort lifts the Vandals to a 70-50 win over Weber State

Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho. -The University of Idaho Vandals Women's Basketball team downed the Weber State University Wildcats 70-50 in Big Sky Conference play. Idaho led for majority of the game and by as many as 20 points. The Vandals put on a strong defensive showing in the fourth quarter and allowed only two points to Weber State in the final ten minutes. A 13-0 run to end the game saw Idaho win 70-50. Three Vandals scored in double-figures while Gina Marxen led the way with a game-high 23 points.

THE GAME

Weber State opened the scoring over Idaho early in the first period and led 5-2 after the first two minutes of play. A three-pointer from Gina Marxen at the 6:43 mark in the first gave Idaho their first lead of the game, 7-5. The Vandals and Wildcats battled back and forth offensively the rest of the way in the first period until Marxen hit her third three-pointer of the game at the 1:49 mark to give Idaho a 17-16.
Slight offensive struggles continued for the Vandals early in the second period before a 9-0 run, capped by a pair of Marxen free-throws, gave Idaho a 31-22 lead over Weber State with 4:10 remaining in the period.
A Hailey Christopher bucket in the paint with 21 seconds left int eh period would give Idaho a seven-point lead, 40-33 at halftime.
Neither side was able to find much offense in the third period. Weber State outscored the Vandals 15-12 in the third, however Idaho held a 52-48 lead entering the fourth period.
Idaho put on a strong defensive showing in the fourth period and only allowed two points to Weber State in the final ten minutes.
The Vandals opened the period on a 5-0 run, capped with a Lizzy Klinker three-pointer, to lead 57-48 at the 6:39 mark, before Kayla Watkins ended the run with a jumper.
Following Watkins' jumper, Idaho outscored Weber State 13-0 in the remaining 6:08 of the game. The run to end the game included six Weber State turnovers.
Idaho defeated Weber State 70-50.


THE NOTES

Despite shooting just 34 percent from the floor and 23 percent from three-point range, the Vandals drained nine three-pointers and scored 70 points, the most since Nov. 20th against Seattle.
The Vandals won the rebounding battle over Weber State, 46-43. Beyonce Bea led Idaho on the boards with nine while Lizzy Klinker chipped in eight.
Idaho forced 17 turnovers by Weber State and only turned the ball over nine times themselves. The Vandals turned Weber State turnovers into 17 points while the Wildcats only managed two points off turnovers.
Eight players scored for Idaho tonight, including three in double figures, as Gina Marxen led all scorers with 23 in the game including six made three-pointers.

THE NAME

Gina Marxen shot lights out from beyond-the-arc to lead the Vandals ins coring with 23 points. Marxne finished 6-13 from three-point range for 46 percent. Marxen was also 5-8 from the charity stripe and recorded three steals. Marxen made six of the Vandals nine total three-pointers and was just one shy of her season-high seven.

Idaho will hit the road to take on Portland State in the first game of 2020 on Jan. 2nd at 7 p.m. in Portland.
