Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

The Streak is Over, Vandals Win!

Vandals defeat Hornets

MOSCOW, Idaho – A spirited first half from the oldest player on the team and an offensive outburst from the youngsters in the second led Idaho past Sacramento State, 94-90, in the final home contest of the season.

THE GAME

The first half was as exciting a game as the Vandal faithful could ask for, with six lead changes and two ties and neither team getting up by more than seven.  Trevon Allen carried the load in the opening frame, scoring 17 points in 17 minutes of action.  Sacramento State reclaimed the lead inside the final minute, but Idaho took it right back to go into the locker room up, 37-36.

While the veteran took care of business in the first, it was the freshmen that took over in the second.  Cameron Tyson went 5-of-5 from beyond the arc in the second half.  RayQuawndis Mitchell scored 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting in the second half.  Jared Rodriguez went 4-of-5 for 10 points in the second half.  And Losini Kamara, who took no field goals on the night and averages just 1.2 points per game, went 4-of-4 from the free throw line, all inside the final 67 seconds of play.

The Vandals got up by as many as 14 in the second half, and found themselves up by 10 with 35 seconds to play.  But the Hornets were able to chip away with a flurry of 3-pointers to make things interesting.  In the end, the Vandals took care of business at the line and earned the 94-90 win.

THE NAME

Trevon Allen.  Allen dropped a career-high 29 points, going 8-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.  He scored 17 points in the first half, connecting on his first four 3-pointers while the rest of the offense got going.

THE NOTES

Idaho moves to 5-24 on the season, including 2-16 in Big Sky play.  Sacramento State falls to 13-14, including 7-11 in Big Sky play.

Tyson knocked down five-plus 3's for the ninth time this season.  He passed Tyler Hall (2015-16) for the most 3-pointers by a freshman in Big Sky history, and now has 97 on the season.

Idaho snapped its 14-game losing streak, which was tied for the second longest in program history.  The longest single season losing streak in program history was 15 games, coming during the 1942-43 season.

Although no seniors were recognized, Saturday was the last home game during Nate Sherwood's tenure in Moscow.  Don Verlin moves to 11-0 on Senior Nights during his time with the Vandals.
