Fifth-Year Goals

COLFAX, Wash. – The Idaho cross country team makes the short trip out to the Cougar Classic on Friday in Colfax, the same location as the 2019 NCAA Cross Country West Regional Championships.  Competition for the women's 6k gets started at 5:15, while the men's 8k will begin at 5:45 p.m.

Senior Krista Story has been through a lot during her tenure in Moscow.  After earning All-Big Sky honors in cross country in 2017, Story was ready for another impressive season in 2018.  Despite not having the season she wanted, Story's back for more in 2019.

"Last year in cross I didn't have the best season because I was injured, so I ran the first race and then came back for conference and regionals," Story said.  "We were doing a lot of cross training, which helped and I still had a decent year, but I have higher goals this year."

Story's dedication and determination got her where she is today: as a veteran leader of the Vandals.  But back four years ago, it was those upperclassmen that were part of making Moscow her home.

"Originally I wasn't sure I wanted to be this close to home, but after we (Krista and her twin sister Kara) came on our visit we really liked it.  The team was amazing, we really liked the coaching and we knew we wanted to go to the same school.  Everything just kind of fell into place, it really just felt like home.  I don't regret it at all."

Now Story gets to work with a group of underclassmen that she helped bring to Moscow.  They've impressed early, giving her hope for some big team accomplishments in 2019.

"There has been a huge change in confidence with the underclassmen and I think that's really helped with them to step up there and perform as well as they can.  It's going to be huge to have that diversity amongst everyone.  I feel like we can toe the line and you never know who is going to be where because everyone is so talented and has that capability to score.

"We have a really awesome team this year.  We have some really talented underclassmen that are going to help get us up there.  Ultimately I think the goal is always to get into a podium position and I think we can really do it this year."

On the individual side, Story is looking to get back to where she's been before.  And beyond.

"I'm hoping everything can fall together.  Being all-conference in cross country would be awesome this year.  To do it in track, indoor and outdoor, would be big goals too."
