Vandals Head to Bill Dellinger Invitational

LIVE RESULTS

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. –
It's back on the road for Idaho cross country, this time heading out to Springfield, Ore., for the annual Bill Dellinger Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon.  The men's 8k gets started at 10:30 a.m., while the women's 6k will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Live results are available through the link provided at the top of the article and on the track and field/cross country schedule page.

"This meet really brings that team aspect even more to the front," said director of track and field/cross country, Tim Cawley.  "A meet like this really helps prepare us for what's coming ahead.  But it's important to get in and get that feel of a big race.  I like that you do have some meets that do feel a little bigger, and you get to manage that adrenalin."

The field is stacked, with 13 men's teams and 12 women's teams currently ranked in their respective regions.  A number of different regions will be represented as well, including the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, South Central, Midwest, Mountain and West.

"We are at a certain level.  It is an invite, we got invited as a team," Cawley added.  "Even from that aspect, things are moving in the right direction and I'm excited to see where we are."

The top-ranked team on both sides is BYU.  The Cougars are currently ranked second in the Mountain Region and in the National Coaches' Poll on the men's side.  BYU is ranked first in the Mountain Region on the women's side, and sixth in the nation.  In total, six men's programs are ranked in the top-30 nationally, with three others receiving votes.  Five women's teams are ranked nationally, and three others are receiving votes.

"We typically will find a meet like this.  Our goal is to be one of the best teams in the country, and to do that you need to see and grow and learn from it," said Cawley.  "To have that opportunity to go out and run against some of the best in the country and see where we're at and how we're progressing, and seeing how close we are, it's always good to have them be a part of that."

The Vandals will also be bolstering their roster headed into the weekend, with Fabian Cardenas, Michael McCausland and Kara Story returning to the squad.  The added veteran presence just adds to the hype.

"This team has some grit," Cawley said.  "They're ready to go out and show that.  This is the type of meet that, if you do have that fight and grit, it shows.  I'm excited to see how they handle the challenge."
