MOSCOW, Idaho – The 2020 indoor track and field season gets underway this weekend with the Vandal Open and Lauren McCluskey Multi in the Kibbie Dome. Multi events begin on Friday at 10:40 a.m., with competition starting back up at 8:55 a.m. on Saturday. For a full meet schedule, check the links at the top of the article.
"We are excited for our first meet of the season this weekend and that it is at home too," said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country,
Tim Cawley. "The community here in Moscow and the university does such an amazing job supporting and helping at our meets that it makes for a good environment for some great competitions."
The meet will be the 2020 opener for the Vandals. The Big Sky Conference recently release its preseason coaches' poll, with the Vandal men selected to finish fourth, while the women were picked seventh.
"The team looks to be in a great spot and this weekend will give us a good indication of where we are at," said Cawley. "The first meet is always exciting and as hard as this team has trained this fall, they are chomping at the bit. We're excited to get out and compete and build on our successful cross country season."
Returning to lead the men's squad is
Zachary Short, who holds the conference record (19.81m/65-0.00) in the shot put and competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season. The senior thrower was named to the All-America Second Team after finishing 15th.
Including Short, three Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship title winning Vandals return this season. Short has won the last two Indoor Championships in the shot put, while junior
Hannah Ringel will look to defend her shot put title on the women's side.
Rechelle Meade took the title in the long jump, and will look to pick up another career medal in the event during her senior year.
The season opening meet has been named to honor the memory of the late Lauren McCluskey. McCluskey, a native of Pullman, Wash., was a student-athlete on the University of Utah track and field team before she was tragically killed in 2018. A moment of silence will be held before Friday's first events.
