MOSCOW, Idaho- Former University of Idaho Women's Basketball Head Coach and current Stanford Women's Basketball Head Coach Tara VanDerveer earned her 1,099
th career win Tuesday night when the Stanford Cardinal topped Pacific 104-61, becoming the winningest coach in women's college basketball history.
VanDerveer began her coaching career at Idaho in 1978 when she was named the third head coach in program history. She led the Vandals to a 17-8 mark in the 1978-79 season before earning a 25-6 record in the 179-80 season. The 79-80 marks the fourth most wins of any season in program history. After just two years with the Vandals VanDeerver was 42-14.
Following Idaho, VanDerveer spent five seasons at Ohio State before spending the next 33 seasons at Stanford, winning two NCAA Championships.
"It's an absolutely amazing accomplishment for Tara," said Head Coach
Jon Newlee. "It shows what she's done through the years, the consistency and the amazing things she's done with her program at Stanford. She's been an icon in women's basketball for so long and I really enjoyed the times we've competed against each other. She's just a fantastic human being and it couldn't happen to a better person or a better basketball coach."
