MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho Track and Field program is thrilled to announce the commitment of Evan Henkel of West Salem High School in Salem, Ore.
Evan is one of the top middle-distance recruits in the country in the 2021 class. His personal best of 1:54.78 in the 800m from his sophomore year ranked him number one in his class in the state of Oregon and 18th nationally. He placed second at the Oregon State Track and Field Championships in the 6A race in the 800m his sophÂomore year. He was also part of a 4 x 400m relay team that paced fifth at the state meet, running the anchor leg in 49.9. Evan won the 800m at the Mountain Valley Conference Championships his sophomore year.
During his freshman year Evan had a personal best of 1:58.35 in the 800m. He contributed at the Oregon State meet as a freshman, running a leg of the 4 x 400m relay team that finished third, which contributed points to a State team title for West Salem. He also runs cross country and has a personal best of 17:12.4 over 5000m. Evan was unable to compete during his junior track and field season due to Covid-19, but has big goals for 2021 and his final seasons in high school.
