Vandals Welcome Lumberjacks For Pair of Games

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals open their home slate of games this week, hosting Northern Arizona in a pair of Big Sky Conference games. The two teams will first meet on Thursday at 5 p.m., before playing again on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 11 a.m. No fans will be allowed in Memorial Gym.

SCOUTING THE LUMBERJACKS (1-6, 0-1 BSC): NAU began the season with five consecutive losses before defeating Denver, 68-65, on Dec. 22.

In their most recent game, Northern Arizona played Gonzaga, who is ranked No. 1 in the country. The Lumberjacks fell, 88-58, with Cameron Shelton recording 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the team.

As a team, NAU is scoring 58.6 ppg while allowing 80.6 ppg. Shelton leads the team in scoring, putting up a Big Sky leading 19.7 ppg. Carson Towt pulls down 5.4 rebounds per game to lead the squad.

SCOUTING THE VANDALS (0-5, 0-2 BSC): Scott Blakney leads Idaho in scoring, recording 11.4 points per game. DeAndre Robinson (10.0 ppg) also averages double figure scoring while pulling down a team-high 4.6 rebounds per game.

LAST TIME OUT: The Vandals dropped a game at Utah, 79-41, on Dec. 18. Blakney scored 13 points to lead the team, while Damen Thacker had 10.

SERIES HISTORY: Idaho leads the all-time series with NAU, 41-24. The Lumberjacks took both meetings last season.

GET TO WORK
Transfer DeAndre Robinson has immediately made a difference as a Vandal. He is leading the squad in rebounding (4.6 rpg) while scoring 10.0 ppg, which is second on the team. The junior is shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from beyond the arc. He is also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

STEADY SENIOR
Senior Scott Blakney is leading the team in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game. He scored 12 points in each of the first three games of the season. Blakney has scored in double figures in seven of his last nine games going back to last season. Overall, the senior is shooting 57.5 percent from the floor.

PERFECT FROM THE STRIPE
Hunter-Jack Madden is a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line this season. He is one of 11 players in Division I who remain perfect from the charity line. Only three players in the country are perfect while shooting more free throws than Madden. The freshman was seven-for-seven in the Dec. 5 game against Sacramento State.

TAKE SOME TIME
The Vandals have 13 days between their last game (at Utah, Dec. 18) and this weekend's games (vs. NAU, Dec. 31). This is the longest break between games inseason since 1999, when the Vandals defeated Montana on December 11, and then fell to Mississippi State on December 29.

LET IT FLY
The Vandals are shooting 35.8 percent from beyond the arc. That mark is good for third in the Big Sky Conference. Robinson and Gabe Quinnett lead Idaho with 1.8 three-point field goals per game, which is tied for 12th in the conference.

ALWAYS THERE
Gabe Quinnett leads the Vandals in minutes played with 32.2 minutes per game. That average is fifth in the BSC.

SIGNED
Two players have signed to join the Vandals next season.
RJ Walker is from Decatur, Ill. He is a guard who averaged 17 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.5 spg, and 3.2 apg his junior season.
Yusef Salih, from Richmond, Va., averaged 14.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.1 apg, and 2.3 steals per game in 2019-20. He was named First Team All-Conference.
