Vandals Overwhelm Hornets in Road Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Idaho men's basketball team took down Sacramento State, 67-53, on Monday evening on the road. The Vandals (6-15, 2-8 BSC) led wire-to-wire, handing the Hornets (11-9, 4-7 BSC) their second-straight home loss.

THE GAME
Trevon Allen opened the scoring at The Nest, and went on to score the first seven points for the Vandals. A jumper by the senior gave the visitors a 4-2 lead with 16:53 to play in the first, and Idaho led the rest of the game. The Vandals led by as many as 18 in the first half, and held a 16-point lead, 39-23, at the break.

The second half got off to a slow start for both teams. The first points did not come until over two minutes into the period when Bryce Fowler hit a three-pointer for the Hornets. The Vandals continued to lead by double digits, but Sacramento State picked up the pressure as they forced turnovers and began to chip away at the deficit. A Fowler jumper with 3:18 remaining cut the Idaho lead to eight, 55-47, but the Vandals made 10 free throws in the final three minutes to secure the double-digit win.

Allen led the Vandals with 27 points and eight rebounds. Marquell Fraser added 10 points and six boards, while Jack Wilson chipped in eight points.

THE QUOTES – Zac Claus
"We built [the lead] by taking great shots, executing, getting the looks that we wanted, and not settling for questionable jumpers. We expended some energy in the first half creating that distance. We took care of the ball for the first 20 minutes."

"The guys had enough resolve; they had enough stick-to-itiveness to rely on one another and to finish plays."

"Our guys are continuing to learn. They're continuing to do what we ask of them and I'm beyond happy for them to have the result like this tonight."

"I was so happy and proud of the guys. I don't care where you go, it's always hard to win on the road…. We don't want to forget how this feels."

UP NEXT
The Vandals will wrap up their three-game road trip at Montana State. The game against the Bobcats on Thursday, February 6, will tipoff at 6 p.m. pacific time.
