Martin Luther King Jr. Day

MOSCOW, Idaho – As the country takes a moment to pause and reflect on the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., University of Idaho Athletics is no different. Several student-athletes, coaches and administrators took some time last week to reflect on what Dr. King and his message meant to them.

"His dream was to see equality and freedom for everyone regardless of the color of your skin, of who you chose to love, of where you come from." said Krista Gray, Director of Student-Athlete Support.

"Freedom means to be able to live this life equally to our counterparts regardless of what color, race or gender that they are. We all live equal," stated by men's basketball's Ja'Vary Christmas.

Assistant football coach, Tony Spencer, provided some insight on his childhood and learning about Dr. King at a young age. He also spoke about freedom in general, and what it means to him.

"Freedom to me is equality. Being able to look at someone, male, female, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, and be able to say that is a person," said Spencer.

Martin Luther King Jr. continues to inspire change and motivates the fight for equality.

Jadyn Hanks from the soccer team added, "to me, Martin worked to make a change in a peaceful manner while demanding freedom and equality, all while impacting many lives and instituting the idea that violence is not the answer."

Years later, the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. live on, especially today.

Let freedom ring from Moscow, Idaho.
